Just thought i’d make a quick note. There have been a number of submissions recently that I haven’t done anything with yet. I will be getting back and acknowledging receipt shortly, I am going to be putting them into the new system we have setup for first readers and I haven’t had time to do it yet. Just putting the final touches on Issue #5.
Issue #5 is just about ready to ship, I am putting the final touches on it at the moment, so look forward to that shortly.
The submission pile is being worked on. The first readers have gone through a bunch, there are yeas and nays in the pile. I will be sending update emails during the week as I go through all their submitted stories. Thank you for your patience and sorry everything moves along slowly.
Finally, Sci Phi got mentioned on Instapundit which is exciting and welcome to anybody who found the magazine from there!
So first up, thank you everybody who has responded to the request for first readers. I’ve got a few now so the processing of the submissions pile should speed up considerably. Thank you everybody for your patience. I don’t think I need any more first readers for the time being but I could use help with editing and proof reading if people are interested.
The submission process will also be changing, we will be moving to using a submission system based on the Mantis Bug Tracker. It is currently setup as a bug tracking system, but the work flow matches submission tracking and as soon as I work out how to relabel some of the categories it will work perfectly. Best of all, authors will be able to track their submissions and see comments on it from first readers if they like.
finally, Issue #5 is coming together and I will be releasing teaser art in the new few days. Cat Leonard> has done more of her amazing work for the issue and the stories and articles in this issue will fire your imaginations.
It looks like one of the stories I published, On a Spiritual Plain by Lou Antonelli has been nominated for a Hugo, an extremely worthy choice. Thanks to everybody who participated and nominated for this Hugo’s and thanks especially to everybody who voted for On a Spiritual Plain and also those who voted for The Sci Phi Show which also won a nomination and will be resuming soon, tied more closely to the journal.
Also, people are asking how the submission pile is going, and it is going but not as fast as I would like. I think I need to bite the bullet here and ask, would anybody be interested in being a first reader for Sci Phi at least for the short stories? I really want to read them all myself but that is proving impossible and it isn’t fair to make everybody wait indefinitely. So please let me know, editor@sciphijournal.com if you would like to get involved.
Also, I have a lot of really good submissions, so I was thinking that instead of taking a very long time to get everything published it might be worth producing an anthology or annual of Sci Phi stories along with the regular issues. I will be contacting the current yes pile about that today.
Finally, Sci Phi’s artist extraordinaire Cat Leonard floated the idea of illustrating a short comic as part of an issue. Would anybody be interested in collaborating with her on something like that?
So, working through the submissions pile is proceeding. I’m getting to the end of January and I will be sending email soon, over the easter long weekend. Issue #5 is also coming together and I will release some teaser art for that soon. I leave you with this movie, Sundays that I thought was interesting and nicely Sci Phi to tide you over!
I have started working through the submission pile, currently about half way through January. Sorry, things have been a little slow, I was sick for a week and didn’t catch the train to work where I most of the submission reading. I have been making a yea/nea pile and will send out replies in the next few days.
Also, Edward M. Lerner Lerner, author and future Sci Phi contributor (Issue #6) has written a nice review of Issue #4 of Sci Phi. Many thanks to him for that. Check it out
Due to a back log of story submissions, i’m going to stop accepting them on Midnight Wednesday the 11th of March till I get the backlog under control, that I am now approximately 7 weeks behind on. Sorry for the delay those of you waiting for a reply.
If you have a story in the works that you would like to submit but wont have it ready by then, please contact me and pitch the idea to me before the deadline and I let it be submitted after the close date. I will re-open submissions as soon as I get back on top of the submission pile. Stay tuned for updates.
Lee Melling (stay tuned for his writing!) has done a wonderful video of all of the ArtWork featured in Sci Phi so far by Cat Leonard.
Also, if you would like some of that Sci Phi artwork for yourself you can get it from Red Bubble. They even do doona covers! Once there are a few more issues I will organize for a large mosaic doona cover of the magazine. I will get one for myself if nothing else!
I am back to working through submissions, slow going but making progress. I will probably close story submissions for a while in the near future (articles are always wanted though!) so I can deal with a fixed sized pile for a while.
